Korean “beastly idols” 2PM performed at the “12th Tokyo Girls Collection 2011 Spring/Summer“, the largest fashion festival in Japan, which was held at the Yoyogi National Gymnasium in Tokyo.

As reported the other day, the six members were excited to perform at the fashion show, and with 23,000 people in the audience, along with 720 journalists and even more viewers on their YouTube live channel, they sure had plenty of reasons to look forward for their stage.

The reception was great, which is no surprise when considering they were performing in front of a crowd full of thousands of excited girls, and their amazing performance could have converted any skeptic into a fangirl.

Member Nichkhun commented in perfect Japanese, “Being able to be here today and standing on this stage makes me really happy.”

Meanwhile, Taecyeon was taken aback by all the beautiful girls. “We heard that all the stylish girls from Japan gathered here at this event and it really seems to be true,” he laughed, “I’m quite nervous now.”

Nichkhun ended their little comment section and appealed to the audience, “After this, we are going to be more active in Japan and we hope that you will support us.”

The group performed a total of four songs: “Heartbeat”, “Again & Again”, “Without U”, and “I’ll Be Back”.

Is there anyone busier than idols these days? SNSD would especially be busy as they are currently performing all throughout Asia. Recently having gained the title ‘Dior’s Muse’ due to their new endorsement with the cosmetics brand, six members of the group sat down with Kang Ok Jin, editor of ELLE.

The editor commented on the members’ down-to-earth personalities, stating that, although they were stars, the members of SNSD were also bright young girls.

When the topic of ‘meal plans’ was brought up, the girls laughed off the idea. Sunny stated, “We eat whatever we want. We are very active so we have to eat often.” Hyoyeon added, ”After 10PM, YoonA always wants to eat roast chicken. So we eat together.” Sooyoung also talked about her metabolism, explaining, ”I want to gain some weight but I can’t. I don’t gain weight easily.”

When asked about the recent holidays, the girls each stated where they visited for their break. Tiffany went back home to San Francisco, Yuri visited Bali with her family. In fact, every member except Hyoyeon (who went to a ski resort) traveled overseas. The girls explained that, whenever they go overseas to film or perform, they can barely leave their hotels and that, although they don’t mind people’s stares, the members have gotten uncomfortable with the increasing amount of people who recognize them across the continent.

The ladies also revealed their ideal honeymoon spots, listing Greece (Sooyoung), Praha (Hyoyeon), Bora Bora (Yuri), Hawaii (Sunny), Mexico Cabo (Tiffany) as well as Milan and Firenze (Jessica).

Aside from talking about themselves, SNSD also discussed beauty. ”My skin is allergic to many things, so I get skin troubles easily. I use Dior products these days and they seem to work well,” Sunny explained. “I don’t touch my face when I get pimples,” Hyoyeon reflected.

As for the member that was most interested in make-up, the unanimous decision pointed at Taeyeon, who was supposedly both interested and skilled at using makeup products. As for fashion, Sooyoung revealed her favorite designers to be Isabel Marant and Alexander Wang, while Tiffany professed her love for D&G and Bluemarine. ”I really want to go to the New York Fashion Week. Isn’t it next week?” Sooyoung wished aloud. “If I didn’t become a singer, I would’ve worked in the fashion industry.”

[NEWS] Giordano Releases Short Movie for its Spring 2011 Ad Campaign

Posted by Ratana 5:56 AM, under |

I really love the Giordano 2011 Spring ad campaign, and its not just because Jung Woo Sung is in it. I love the playful naturalness of the shots and the concept, which really dovetails with the clothing basics that Giordano is known for. Simple clothes for hanging out with friends. Now if only I could get some friends like Jung Woo Sung and So Ji Sub.

If my I Lub You came over I’d cook him pasta, too!

Normally the sight of So Ji Sub playing a harmonica with his long fingers would mesmerize me, but I am strangely enchanted by Shin Mina‘s derriere.

I reckon not everyone can look as good as these people wearing the same Giordano clothes, but gosh darn it, I want to try anyways! Giordano, you win this round against my wallet.

Shin Mina may not be an actress that I’m particularly fond of, but I have to hand it to her – she’s a born CF queen. She can transform herself into any image easily, and then convince you that you have to try it.

[News] The geniuses of K-dramaland

The geniuses of K-dramaland

Cr : javabeans
Musicians, athletes, doctors, chaebols, beast men, candy men : All have been, at one point or another, the hot drama trend of the moment. Now geniuses are taking their place as the favored stereotype, with examples seen in Sign, Midas, and Paradise Ranch, to name a few.

Well, that’s the stance proffered in the two source articles, at least — although I’d argue that geniuses have been a favorite of dramas for much longer than that. But perhaps they have a point about the increased visibility of such types in the last year or so. It’s one of the character types I don’t really like, and have been groaning to see more and more of them littering the K-drama landscape, because it seems like such a narrative crutch: How to make a guy (or girl) seem special? You could go for complex characterization or keen insight into human nature, or you could take an easy shortcut and turn him (or her) into a genius. Guess which one most dramas choose?

One recent entry into the pantheon is Jang Hyuk‘s Do-hyun character in SBS’s Midas (pictured above), who’s a fund manager who goes through law school at the top of his class and becomes a lawyer. He’s not just smart, though, and the drama makes it clear he’s a genius lawyer. As if we wouldn’t find him adequately impressive otherwise.

Even in a light romantic comedy like Paradise Ranch, we’ve got ‘em: Lee Yeon-hee‘s Da-ji character isn’t a mere veterinarian, but a genius to boot, a member of Mensa who entered university at the age of 16, where she studied genetic engineering. Even though the main plot is the bickering romance between her and her ex-husband, Changmin.

And you can’t leave out Ji-hoon, Park Shin-yang character in SBS’s Sign, who’s not content to merely be a well-educated top forensic doctor in Korea, but an internationally renowned genius. And the drama doesn’t let you forget it, does it? He cracks tough cases and finds murderers with his prodigious skills, while finding some time for romance, too. Like all good K-drama heroes.

Another genius currently on the air is played by Lee Chung-ah in the daily SBS drama Pure Pumpkin Flower; her Soon-jung graduated with top marks from a science high school who then chooses a culinary career rather than university. She isn’t just driven to be the best chef, but actually “ develops new cuisine” (whatever that means) with another character (Jin Tae-hyun), gets work at a restaurant, and wins first place in a cooking competition.

Hm, come to think of it, those are all from SBS, so maybe it’s the broadcaster who’s got the jones for geniuses. A rep with the SBS drama department explained that they’ve opted with the genius types to “heighten dramatic tension” and to offer more detailed portrayals of the characters and professions, all in the name of greater viewer satisfaction.

As a viewer myself, I’d rather that dramas took a step back from this trend, since over-the-top brilliance is no longer quite so effective once it becomes so overwhelmingly common. It’s like the chaebol trend; those elite ranks are meant to occupy the highest rungs in the social and economic ladder, in the way of royalty, and the chaebol hero was a useful substitution for Prince Charming in early dramas, before he became so overutilized that it’s much rarer these days to see the Average Joe win the girl.

Sure, dramas carry an element of fantasy and wish fulfillment, and it’s fun to give our characters tons of money, awesome wardrobes, and superhuman brain capacities. But where’s the fun when they’re ALL like that? Why make a genius a genius for the sheer sake of it, rather than having a real dramatic purpose for his braininess? (I can think of a very few examples where the genius label actually served the drama well — Story of a Man is one — but most of the time, it’s pointless to the story.)

What’s wrong with being merely smart? I love a sharp intellect as much as the next girl (okay, a lot more than the next girl, actually), but I’d like a little more smarts in the writing staffs, and a lot less in the heroes. Because the genius crutch is a manifestation, most times, of lazy writing — and, I’ll argue, actually gets in the way of the whole fantasy-wish-fulfillment exercise. We want to believe that these fantastical drama happenings could, on some level, happen to us — in a parallel life, perhaps, but not in an alternate dimension — and if they only ever happen to the uber-rich, the uber-elite, and the uber-smart… well, what’s in it for me?

You’re My Pet remake project finally gets going

Cr : javabeans

FINALLY. And here I’d thought this movie might never get off the ground.

We’re now seeing some movement on You’re My Pet, which is just getting going after stalling for many months and will be holding a press conference in Japan today.

Jang Geun-seok (You’re Beautiful) was cast as the male lead — the titular “pet” to a sophisticated career woman who adopts him as her companion — many moons ago. It took longer to cast the female lead, to be played by Kim Haneul (Road No. 1), who joined the project after other big names were tossed around for the role like Athena’s Su Ae and Will It Snow For Christmas’ Han Ye-seul. Despite her character’s success in her work and her stunning looks, she’s pretty bumbling with personal relationships (especially romance). His character is a rising ballet dancer, with dreams of becoming a musical actor and choreographer. The story follows the “simple love” that unfolds between them.

According to her management, her hopes for this film include positioning Kim as a Hallyu star. Her action-comedy movie Level 7 Civil Servant (aka My Girlfriend Is an Agent) had some success in Japan, and she intends to increase her activities there following You’re My Pet.

The movie is directed by Kim Byung-gon, who seems relatively new to directing; he was an assistant director for the short film One Day and the feature film Stroll. Not, perhaps, the most encouraging résumé, but one can always hope for the best.

This project, based on the Japanese manga (with a j-dorama as well, back in 2003), was announced for a Korean film remake a full year ago with Jang Geun-seok attached. But ever since those early announcement teasing various stars in the lead roles, we’ve heard a curious silence on the subject, and Jang went on to film a drama series in the interim (the ill-fated Mary Stayed Out All Night). So it’s a relief to see that the production is, at long last, getting the wheels back in motion.

Kim heads to Japan on March 3 for the press conference, while Jang preceded her there. You’re My Pet plans to begin filming soon — Kim will have to wrap Blind, her thriller with Yoo Seung-ho, first, which completes in April — and is aiming for a theatrical release in the latter half of the year.
